Alured was articled in Local government,and admitted in 1962, and spent much of his subsequent career in private practice. He has a specialism in the appeals of drug couriers in the Court of Appeal both against conviction and sentence including successful appeals against conviction. He appeared as advocate in the Court of Appeal decision of R.v Attuh Benson, reported in Criminal Law Review for March 2005 page 243, when he sought to challenge the existing Aramah Guidelines on sentences for drug couriers and subsequently was invited to address the Sentencing Advisory Panel thereon. The Panel made recommendations for changes to the guidelines to the Sentencing Council. He has campaigned for alterations to the sentencing of passport offenders as well as drug couriers. In 2007 the Legal Action Group awarded him the title of Legal Aid Lawyer of the year for outstanding achievement.
