Baroness Stern is Senior Research Fellow at the International Centre for Prison Studies at King's College London. She is also Honorary President of Penal Reform International (PRI), a non-governmental organisation promoting penal reform throughout the world which she founded with others in 1989. From 1977 to 1996 she was Director of the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO). From 2003 to 2009 she was the Convenor of the Scottish Consortium on Crime and Criminal Justice She became a Life Peer in 1999 and sits in the House of Lords as a Crossbencher. She has written several books on the topic of criminal justice, penal reform and prisons and in 2009 was invited to conduct a review of rape laws in England and Wales
