Biography
Ben Gumpert is a barrister specialising in Criminal Law and practising from 36 Bedford Row. His work in the UK includes leading junior briefs in murder cases, and a range of other serious criminal work including sexual crimes, fraud and drugs cases.
Since 2001 he has been working at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, based in Tanzania. Ben is based in Tanzania for about seven months of the year, where he is defending a former Rwandese Cabinet Minister who is accused of planning and organising the genocide in 1994. The trial has been ongoing since November 2003. First instance proceedings should conclude with a judgement some time in 2009. The outcome of the case is likely to become the source of seminal law on Joint Criminal Enterprise and Superior Responsibility.
Ben has written text books on Trading Standards Law and Confiscation. He the joint author of a paper on aspects of international criminal law published in the International Criminal Law Review.
Ben sits as a Deputy District Judge (Magistrates Court) and as a part time Legal Chairman of the Pensions Appeal Tribunal.
Ben has a working knowledge of French and German. He is married with two children. His interests outside the law include cricket, English church music and wine.
