Hugo specialises in extradition, crime (particularly terrorism), public law and mutual legal assistance, including restraint and confiscation. He won the Chambers and Partners award for criminal barrister of the year 2008, and took silk in 2009.

Notable extradition cases include Abu Hamza, the Natwest 3, David Mills and Silvio Berlusconi in Italian mutual legal assistance proceedings and the Secretary of State in the cases of Ian Norris and Gary McKinnon.

Hugo represented the DPP in the judicial review claim (brought by a member of Jean Charles De Menezes’s family). He was also instructed on behalf of the SFO in connection with its successful defence (in the House of Lords) of the judicial review of its decision to discontinue the corruption investigation into BAE: R(Corner House) v SFO. In January 2007 he represented The Queen at the inquest into the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. He is currently instructed on behalf of the Metropolitan Police in relation to the inquest into the death of the barrister Mark Saunders.

He is a Special Advocate in control order proceedings under the PTA 2005 and led for the Special Advocates in AF v SSHD in the House of Lords.
