James read law at the LSE before qualifying as a solicitor in 1966. He was called to the Bar in 1970 and took silk only 14 years later. He is now a master of the Inner Temple bench and a Deputy High Court Judge and has practiced at the highest level in almost every commonwealth jurisdiction, the ECJ in Luxembourg and the ECHR in Strasbourg. James edits Supperstone, Goudie and Walker on Judicial Review as well as practitioner texts in local government law and he edited the Audit Commission Act 1998.
