John Benstead started out at Clifford Chance, where he specialised in regulatory investigations and corporate defence work, before moving to the Inland Revenue as a prosecutor. John later became the Assistant Director at the Serious Fraud Office, where he acted as lead lawyer in a judicial review of the Director’s decision not to commence an investigation into the activities of the ‘NatWest Three’, a landmark case in which three British bankers were eventually extradited to the United States on fraud charges.
He was also a member of the cartel team at the Serious Fraud Office, which oversaw the introduction of the Enterprise Act 2002. Along with the Office of Fair Trading, the cartel team was responsible for the introduction for a number of policy initiatives, including the OFT's immunity policy. John has lectured on the cartel offence.
John is currently a partner in the business crime and commercial fraud group at McGrigors LLP and an active member of the Fraud Advisory Panel.
