Richard Langham specialises in town and country planning and related areas of local government law, environmental law and compulsory purchase and compensation. Richard Langham specialises in town and country planning and related areas of local government law, environmental law and compulsory purchase and compensation. He regularly appears at public inquiries, in the High Court and the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber), acting for both local authorities, developers and other commercial litigants and amenity groups. Richard’s practice covers all aspects of planning, including plan preparation, planning appeals relating to a wide range of developments and legal challenges. In recent years he has appeared in many leading cases concerning the enforcement of planning control by injunction, especially against gypsies.Richard has expertise in core areas of environmental law, including statutory nuisance, appeals against abatement notices, the assessment of noise and flooding, environmental impact, contaminated land and the Habitats Directive. He acted for Bath and North East Somerset Council in the recent case of R (Baker) v Bath and North East Somerset Council [2009] EWHC 595 Admin which has led to the amendment of the EIA Regulations. Richard has appeared at many CPO inquiries and often advises on compensation and valuation issues. He regularly acts in Lands Tribunal references, having appeared recently in Potter v Hillingdon LBC [2010] UKUT 212 LC, in which significant guidance on the application of Spirerose v TfL was given by the President.
