Course Aims:

This two part CPDcast series aims to provide practitioners with a comprehensive overview and analysis of the Aarhus Convention, looking at the parties to the Convention, its purpose and the steps that the European Union took to implement the Convention. It focuses on the key definitions of the Convention and examines the significance of the three “pillars” whilst looking at the relevant case law.

Outcomes:
After completing the course you will:
  • Understand the basics of the Aarhus Convention;
  • Be aware of the parties to the Aarhus Convention;
  • Understand the purpose of the Aarhus Convention and how it was implemented;
  • Understand what a number of the key terms of the Aarhus Convention mean, such as “public authorities” and “acting in a legislative capacity”;
  • Understand the obligations that the Aarhus Convention places on public authorities and national authorities Be aware how the Aarhus Convention provides access to justice for environmental NGOs;
  • Develop an awareness of the Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee and its purpose.
