This podcast gives a detailed overview of the law relating to the protection of animal welfare. It takes a detailed look at the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the duties it places on animal owners and the penalties available for individuals found guilty of an animal welfare offence.

Outcomes:
After completing the course you will:
  • Understand what the Animal Welfare Act 2006 means for the investigation and prosecution of animal cruelty cases;
  • Know which animals are protected by the Animal Welfare Act 2006;
  • Know when under the Act an individual will be ‘responsible’ for an animal;
  • Be familiar with the provisions relevant to the offence of ‘unnecessary suffering’, mutilation, tail docking, administering poisonous or injurious drugs and animals fighting in public;
  • Be familiar with provisions relating to the welfare of animals under the Act;
  • Know the rules relating to the transfer of animals;
  • Know what happens when an Inspector is of the opinion that a person is failing to comply with animal welfare duties;
  • Know what different penalties and post conviction powers are available for a person found guilty of offences under the Act.
