This podcast aims to give practitioners a comprehensive introduction to the various employee share schemes, their respective advantages and tax implications, in order that listeners in turn can make informed opinions on which schemes might be most appropriate for a given client.
In this podcast Mark Gearing, a solicitor at Field Fisher Waterhouse, gives a comprehensive review of the major schemes for employees acquiring shares in their employer. The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed at length, as are the tax implications both for CGT and Income Tax. The distinction between HMRC-approved and un-approved plans is explored with regard to the qualifying criteria and what categories of shares may be issued. Concerning share options, the matter of when options can be exercised and what events might disqualify an employee are explained.
