This course provides an introductory overview of the pivotal role of expert witnesses and invites discussion on the possible introduction of an accreditation scheme for experts. The situation with regard to civil, criminal and family cases is examined and, as such, would benefit practitioners from a wide range of specialisms.

Outcomes:

  • Understand the importance placed on such experts by the courts and the effect false 'opinion' can have on the outcome of a case;

In this CPDcast, Penny Cooper examines the role of the expert witness in trials generally in addition to focusing on some high profile cases that have highlighted the importance of ensuring experts are sufficiently aware of their responsibilities. Penny uses some of her own research to provide guidance and suggestions on how practitioners can guarantee independent and reliable expert witnesses.

Penny Cooper is a barrister and Associate Dean at The City Law School, City University. She has conducted research on the level of training expert witnesses receive which was funded and supported by a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award from City University.
