This podcast is aimed at practitioners interested in information law, specifically needing an introduction to the UK’s Freedom of Information regime. It aims to address how the legislation works, the key exemptions that may apply to a request and the issues for public authorities in responding to a request.

Outcomes:
After completing the course you will:
  • Know the key sources of Freedom of Information law in the UK;
  • Understand the obligations of the public sector actors in satisfying those rights;
  • Understand the scope of the Freedom of Information Act to obtain information about private bodies where there is a nexus with a public body;
  • Know what categories of information are covered by the Act;
  • Know the procedure for applying for disclosure under the Act;
  • Be aware of the key exemptions under the Freedom of Information Act about which practitioners should be aware;
  • Understand the relevance of the public interest in decisions to refuse a request;
  • Know what format an FOI response should take and what should be included in it;
  • Know what mechanisms exist to protect public bodies from repeated or ‘vexatious’ requests;
  • Know the extent to which a public body can decline a request on grounds of expense or administrative complexity;
  • Understand how the cost of compliance with FOI is calculated;
  • Understand the relationship between the Environmental Information Regulations of 2004 and the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
